USB Redirection problem with newest USB Flash Drive

Starting few month ago, some users start complaining about their USB Drive get empty after awhile under a View session. At first is was only the SanDisk Ultra 64Gb the culprit. We reproduce the problem with 3 identical device of the same model. Now there is more and more reported problem of the same type but with others USB Drive. Here what we collected so far:

-SanDisk Ultra USB 3.0 64Gb (#SDZ48-064G)

-SanDisk Cruzer Glide 16Gb (#SDZ60-016G)

-Emtec C450 Slide (64 Gb)

To reproduce the problem, just do a read stress test and after some time (between 5sec and 3min) the USB Drive still connected on the client and visible in Windows Explorer but the content shows empty. Windows sees a device but can't do nothing on it. Disconnect and reconnect the device in the View client fix the issue. The local client have no errors.

We have a support ticket open since january on this. We gave a lot if debug log and additionnal datas on this issue but we still waiting. So far VmWare wasn't able to confirm the problem. We suspected the newest cheap USB Drive with new USB controller on it. Something change for sure with these USB Drive because everything works fine with old device. Have you ever see the same behavior?

Client: Windows 7 and Windows 10

VM: Windows 10 build 1709 and 1803, Windows 7

VmWare View client: 4.8.1 (we test many oldest versions)

Vmware view Agent: 7.4 and 7.5

ESXi: 6.5

Hi serinfbco,

Could you please test with Horizon Client 4.9? In 4.9, we fix a similar issue with certain USB drives. Moreover, Client Drive Redirection(CDR), instead of USB redirection, is recommended for USB Flash Drive case.

Hi,

1) Do you have same issue with SanDisk Ultra USB 3.0 32Gb?

2) What is exact operation of "read stress test"? Does it mean the USB disk is always connected to agent, and copy file from USB disk to agent OS continuously?

Hi ada2017,

1) We tested only one SanDisk Ultra 3.0 32Gb and we didn't reproduced the issue

2) Yes just copy large files from the USB disk to the agent and after awhile the disk fail and Windows shows it empty. We try diffirents free USB test tools (Flash Drive Tester, ChkFlsh) to get more inside and a simple read stress test always fail with culprit devices. Some users reported their device become empty during their View session when they use those USB devices. We have around 1000 users here and there is a lot of USB devices in circulation and no one reported this problem before. Now we see it and it is happening only with few new USB devices yet but every week we see that more often.

Hi GangSi

You're right! I tested the usb drive with the new VMware Client 4.9 and it's working. The 64Gb USB drive was fully tested without droping. I've seen 97 recoverable errors during this 3 hours test. So yes the new client 4.9 seems to resolve this issue. Thanks!
