Unable to query the live source machine - from debian wheezy

Hello,

For beginning, I'm sorry for my poor english.

I need to convert a physical server to a virtual machine. But I can't because I have always this error : 'Unable to query the live source machine."

I had already convert two physical servers in a same LAN with the same VMWare convertor with success.

I have check all step on VMware Knowledge Base,

1. I can sign in with root on the physical machine.

2. I can connect the physical machine from Windows 10 which content VMWare convertor with putty.

3. I checked '.bashrc' on '/root' folder and there isn't line beginning by echo command.

4. Root user can sign in and passwd file is ok.

5. 'tmp' folder isn't a partition but I can create folder and file on this folder and right is :

ls -lisa /tmp/

1177346    4 drwxrwxrwt 23 root    root       4096 Jul 21 20:38 .

I run VMware convertun such as administrator. You can't find log of my VMware convertor in attachment.

You can find more information about physical server :

Kernel : 'Linux jenkins 3.16.0-0.bpo.4-amd64'

lsb_release -a

Distributor ID: Debian

Description: Debian GNU/Linux 7.11 (wheezy)

Release: 7.11

Codename: wheezy

For your information, I can see that on auth.log on physical server :

Jul 21 20:38:48 jenkins sshd[23491]: Accepted password for root from 10.1.10.55 port 49869 ssh2

Jul 21 20:38:48 jenkins sshd[23491]: pam_unix(sshd:session): session opened for user root by (uid=0)

10.1.10.55 is my windows 10.

So I think my problem is on physical server.

Thank you.

You have /dev/sda5 mounted twice. Converter doesn't work when there are multiple mounts of the same block device - VMware vCenter Converter Standalone 6.2.0.1 Release Notes. Unmount one of them and try again.

Please attach the worker log (the UI log is useless here). It can be found in %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\VMware\VMware vCenter Converter Standalone\logs.

Hello Plamen,

Thanks for your reply.

You can find worker log file in attachment.

I tried remove vmware convertor and set up a new installation of vmware convertor but it's not work.

Regards.

I am having the same problem with a RHEL 5 server.  I was hoping someone might be able to explain to me what I'm doing wrong.  It works on my centos server no problem.

Thanks

There are two suspicious errors in this log:

2019-08-25T01:06:59.294-07:00 info vmware-converter-worker[10396] [Originator@6876 sub=Default] Converter::Util::SysCommandWrapper::LogResult: Command stderr:

--> cat: /tmp/.vmware-sysinfo-hrxbarizmwmxodvt/vmware-sysinfo.log: No such file or directory

and

2019-08-25T01:06:59.043-07:00 error vmware-converter-worker[10396] [Originator@6876 sub=Default] [Converter Agent SysinfoQuery] while trying to execute "C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware vCenter Converter Standalone\pscp.exe -noprompt -stdin-pass-and-key <ConverterPrivateKeyEnd> -P 22 -thumbprint bc:64:4f:8d:59:10:9e:28:f1:83:4b:10:57:28:84:ab C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware vCenter Converter Standalone\vmware-sysinfo-lin64.tar.gz root@192.168.0.5:/tmp/.vmware-sysinfo-hrxbarizmwmxodvt/vmware-sysinfo-lin64.tar.gz" received error code (1) with result: Fatal: Out of memory!

It is likely one of them is a red herring. I would surmise the second is the right one. Ensure the /tmp dir has both read and write permissions. Looks like pt.3 from VMware Knowledge Base except that it seems write only from the error. Alternatively you may want to set a fixed path for sysinfo, see Customize a Path for Temporary Files During Linux Queries

When I run :

mount | grep /tmp

The output I get is:

/dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol03 on /tmp type ext3 (rw)

It then says:

If you see noexec permissions or nosuid permissions, temporarily reset the permissions by running these commands:

mount -t ext3 /dev/hdaX /tmp -o rw,exec,nodev

OR

mount -o remount,exec /tmp

Note: Replace /dev/hdaX with your device name.

I don't see noexec or nosuid.  Just rw.  I was going to run the first command to reset the permissions anyway but how do I know what to put for /dev/hdaX ? How do I find out the device name.

Thanks for steering me in the right direction.

Hi

So it seems that is not the issue ('/tmp' is mounted rw, w/o noexec). Double check by 'touch'ing a file in /tmp logged with the user you log in from Converter and check it is there after 'ls'. I would also try using some other directory, not in /tmp, and see if the issue persist. If it does, upload the whole worker log from the failed attempt. Perhaps it may give a hint about the out of memory error.

(In case you want to finish the exercise - "/dev/hdaX " is because the example is with basic volume; your case is with logical, so use whatever the mount command has shown.)

I created a test file and it was listed after running ls.

You mean try in a directory under /tmp?  Or an entirely different directory such as var?

I was looking into the guide you posted on how to specify the directory but when I open the XML file I do not see the lines it's referencing.

I suppose I can just create it manually?  Does it have to be in a specific location of the XML file?

Here is the worker log

Thanks

<sysinfoTmpRoot> in a tag inside <converter_agent> section. It normally is in converter-worker.xml on installation but commented out.

I meant a directory outside of /tmp

But all that is perhaps not relevant. From the log:

2019-08-26T01:36:06.857-07:00 error vmware-converter-worker[17828] [Originator@6876 sub=Default] [Converter Agent SysinfoQuery] while trying to execute "C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware vCenter Converter Standalone\pscp.exe -noprompt -stdin-pass-and-key <ConverterPrivateKeyEnd> -P 22 -thumbprint bc:64:4f:8d:59:10:9e:28:f1:83:4b:10:57:28:84:ab C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware vCenter Converter Standalone\vmware-sysinfo-lin64.tar.gz root@192.168.0.5:/tmp/.vmware-sysinfo-yjyjxwcgxmsnnojb/vmware-sysinfo-lin64.tar.gz" received error code (1) with result: Fatal: Out of memory!

The issue is that in can not scp the sysinfo tarball in the first place. There is something weird with this machine. I suppose it is not insufficient disk space, since the error is 'out of memory'. I have no idea what may cause it, but at least there is some clarity what is going on - Converter can not copy to the source machine. It uses pscp which is PuTTY's scp. You may try to scp something manually to the source machine and investigate.
