Why does the sound card sometimes not connect to linux guests on boot?

Sometimes certain linux guests boot successfully but with the sound card device appearing disconnected under "Removable Devices". Why might that be? Seen it with the peppermintos and TENS distros. Host is windows 8.1.

If your host is Windows 8.1 then we're not talking about vSphere here, correct? If so, this is in the wrong forum.
