Shared Folders volume format

Snow Leopard Server guest in High Sierra host, Fusion 10.1.2

I am having trouble with an application using files in a shared folder and I suspect that is because of the volume format that the guest sees for the shared folders.  Probably the permission model is confusing it or something like that. If I mount the host machine drive in the guest either using AFS or SMB, the application can access the files fine.  The volume format for the Shared Folders drive shows up as "Unknown (vmhgfs)". Is there a way to make shared folders in NTFS, MacOS Extended, or some other MacOS compatible format?
