    EPops in vrops_OS andapplication monitoring

    jvm2016 Enthusiast

      Hi All ,

Need some help in understanding how vrops and loginsight can effectively mange and monitor OS inside vms and applications running on them .

following is what i understood after reading PDF.

1:there is EPops adapter that can be configured to monitor OS and applications .though it requires agent to be installed on each guest os .is this sufficient to monitor and manage all objects inside os including apllications??

2:also there are mangement packs available in vmware solutions exchange.consider management pack for MS sql .what additional information we can get if we have only EPops adapter configured.??

3:there is also wavefornt integration in 6.7 relaease of vrops howit is difeerent from epops and mangment pack .??

4:consider we have loginsigt also configured in environmet .though the basic purpose of loginsight to work as syslog server but there content pack avaible where in you can extend the capabilities

by collecting logs from sources othere than virtual machines and esxi .

I am seeling lot of efforts being going on to proactivlely monitor OS and applications .what is the best and convenient solutions recommened .

appreciate yur thoughts on above points.

The EpOps solution is an agent-based solution which allows sending OS and application metrics back to vROps similar to how it ingests others from VMs and other infrastructure. Using management packs, you can collect more information using these EpOps agents. Wavefront is different in that it's designed to be a real-time metric gathering solution capable of huge scale. It also is a different beast since it requires a subscription to the SaaS offering. In 6.7, the two can interface. Ultimately, what's "best" comes down to what you want to accomplish.

            Thanks for your response .

ultimately the end goal is to fix the issue  proactivley before it become outage .

this is not at esxi layer but right from server hardware to esxi to vms to OS to DB to middleware to application .  and as you mentioned management packs can extend the capabilities to monitor

other external sources like cisco ucs etc.

vRops and loginsight  seems to be very promising solutions to acheive the said goal .

However i would like to extend this discussion to understand following points .

1:consider a situation wherein vm current memory demand metric is comapred  against the last two months trend  (dynamic threshold ).

vrops found deviation and recommened increase in memory .

do you see any scope of automation if it can trigger any workflow (may be if can intergrate with vRO) to increase memory .

2:can we create a dashboard to monitor only VCSA.though there any ways to monitor like  vcenter chart or vami interface of vcneter .

but inorder to give utmost importance to vcenter we want to create dashbord  for VCSA only in vrops .can you briefly expain the process for this.

3:are content pack in loginsight and mangement pack in vrops same thing?

            appreciate your response .

This type of capability is already present in vROps by using the Actions adapter. Essentially, if a VM is deemed to be undersized (through a variety of metrics), you can opt to have the policy right-size that VM. I'll point out that I'd be very cautious of rolling this out across your entire estate because it may produce an undesired effect. Test small and in low-key environments.

You can create a dashboard to monitor whatever you want, however there is already a SDDC Health Management pack which has some that come OOTB.

3:are content pack in loginsight and mangement pack in vrops same thing?

No. Log Insight (vRLI) and vROps are two separate products that have separate goals. Content packs are the same in that they allow extension of those products to encompass other infrastructure in simple and pre-defined ways.

                  Hi Daphnissov,

                  good morning .

this is in reference to first point which we discussed yesterday .

"This type of capability is already present in vROps by using the Actions adapter."

currently iam doing lab 1801 and found one scenrio as below

in above scenrio it is been recommened to add a new hard disk or expand the existing hard disk .iam trying to find actions adapter  to

by action adapter   do you mean click on enable action radio button while deplying vrops or configuring adapter for vcenter.

all i can see are the below actions for this machine .

Disk-related workflows/operations are not yet built into the actions adapter, so you'll have to take manual action yourself in vCenter for those.
