Cant upgrade from Server 2008 R2 (x64) to 2012 R2 (x64)

Hi

I am trying to upgrade my VM to 2012 R2 but the installation cant find the LSI Ultra320 storage controller driver.

I note that if I create a new VM with SCSI controller it sets it to "lsisas1068" whereas my older VM is set to "lsilogic".

This is a single disk VM so this is the boot drive!

Does anyone know how I can switch to using "lsisas1068" as the storage controller?

I tried changing in the VMX file but then the guest OS wont boot.

I've tried everything on this and I really need to keep the installed APP's and data post upgrade (otherwise I'd throw aware this VM and start again!).

Any ideas all?

Regards

Julian

What should work (I assume that you already made a backup):

  • temporarily add a second virtual disk to the current VM. Make sure you select the LSI-SAS Controller, so that Windows loads the required drivers
  • once drivers are loaded, shut down the VM, and remove the second virtual disk again
  • close the VM's tab (or Workstation) to ensure that the configuration gets re-read after editing the .vmx file
  • change the controller in the VM's configuration file
