Can't install Ubuntu 17.10.1 or Debian 9.4 on ESXi 6.5

I am trying to install a Ubuntu or Debian server. I have created the VM and tried Linux with both Debian and Ubuntu and also the "Other 3.x Linux" setting with the following hardware,

Mounted the ISO, but when the installation should start I just get a grey window,

and the machine hangs so I have to power it off.

First thing I'd recommend is update your ESXi embedded host client with the version from the Fling site if you haven't done that already. Second, why not use the existing guest OS types for those distros? They're there for a reason.

Hmm, what is that ESXi embedded host client?

I'm running the installation from vCenter and connecting to the console through VMRC.

I tried on my other host and there it worked, that host was complient in Update Manager, the host that the Linux did not work in was not that, I'm missing some patches on that one, I should install them and see if it will make things any better.

I have tried with both the existing guest OS type and also with the general and none of them worked.

Thanks.
