ESXi host failure question - running VMWare 5.5 3f

Hello,

If an ESXi host fails, is part of a cluster, from what I understand, the VM's on that host move to a more viable host that is up and operational.

A few questions in this example:

1. When the VM's migrate, are they shut down before they move?

2. Do the connections that are working on the VM's move or are they severed?

3. If the answer to #2 is they are severed, is there a way to ensure the connections stay alive?

I appreciate your help.

If an ESXi host fails, is part of a cluster, from what I understand, the VM's on that host move to a more viable host that is up and operational.

Only if HA is enabled on the cluster where the host fails and there is at least one host which is capable of powering on the failed VMs.

1. When the VM's migrate, are they shut down before they move?

If a host fails the VMs fail immediately.

2. Do the connections that are working on the VM's move or are they severed?

VM is failed (powered off), so yes, they're severed.

3. If the answer to #2 is they are severed, is there a way to ensure the connections stay alive?

See all previous answers. A failed VM is one which is powered off.
