Accented characters mapping with extended Mac keyboard and Windows 10

Hi All,

Very new to Fusion and Windows.

I have installed Windows 10 and Fusion as well as Trados (a specialist translation app).

It all works fine except for this: I cannot manage to transcribe the classic Mac key modifiers for accented characters (e.g.: to type "à" on a Mac, i am used to typing "alt ` + a" ;  " ï " is "alt u + i") into Windows 10  ones.

I have a workaround with using the International English keyboard of Windows 10, but it is really hard to discard 20 years of muscle memory of my usual shortcuts.

Question is: in Fusion 8.5,  is it possible to map Mac sequence like "alt ` + a" to get an "à" in Windows 10?

Thank you.

Hi Supercure,

Welcome to use Fusion.

When we use the Fusion with Windows guest, take Spanish for example:

we need to set the Host Input method (Mac) as Spanish, and at the same time, set the Guest Input method (Windows) as Spanish, then most key will be work fine.

For some special characters in some languages, if some keys don’t work, we need to use keyboard mapping to support it.

Could you please kindly let me know below 2 items?

  1. The Input method you used on Host and Guest OS?
  2. The physical keyboard layout you used is English or non-English keyboard?

Thanks,

Linda

Hi Linda

Thx for your response.

1/ Host (my Mac with OSX 10.12.6) is set on British keyboard. Guest with Windows 10  guest is set to English (United States)

2/ Physical keyboard is Apple Extended im English version.

I use French and English as two main languages, but I only use the British Apple keyboard and shortcuts/modifiers to type both languages (French has a really strange "azerty" keyboard instead of the English "qwerty", so it is too difficult for me to change typing habits).

What do you think?

Kind regards

Hi Supercure,

Thanks for the detailed info.

Could you please let me know your preferred layout, “azerty” or “qwerty” ?

I’m not sure if you are using the “azerty” keyboard layout with British Apple keyboard on Mac machine,

or using “qwerty” layout but sometimes want to input some French special characters?

And with Fusion, which keyboard layout you’d like use in Windows 10 guest OS, “azerty” or “qwerty”?

Thanks,

Linda

Hi again, Linda

I use a standard Apple British keyboard (qwerty) set on British layout and I am happy with it.

The problem I try to solve is how to type accented characters " À " in windows guest (on a Mac with the above settings, you would type " alt  `  " simultaneously and then "A".

When I do this using VMWare, this sequence is interpreted not as À but say, as a shortcut in the app that is currently in use.

Same question exist therefore for shortcuts: how do you type the correct Windows shortcuts on a Mac ?

Thank you for your help

I have a lot of problem first time installing VMWare & Windows 7 on a macbook. The apple macbook french keyboard was not mapped correctly.

The bypass I use was to install bootcamp underwindows + keyboard driver.

Seems to work fine.

How did you "install" the drivers? I got the drivers on bootcamp, there is a folder named "Apple" but beyond that point how do you put it into the virtual machine, ie where do you paste it?
