Cannot connect Outlook to exchange using the Mac's vpn

I have fusion 8.5pro.  I made a vm win7 with office 2010 on it.

I connect to our vpn through the mac (not vm).  I can access corporate folders from the vm this way so I know the vpn from the mac is working.  But when I configure outlook, it cannot find the exchange server (2010).

The only way it can find it is if I vpn from the vm.  I want to avoid this two-step operation as it is redundant.

Any thoughts?

ok, I am using NAT, and I just added our domain dns server to the dns server list in network properties.  Now it connects!  Simplest answer was the right one.
