Upgrade ESXi from 6.0U3 to 6.5U1, preferably via VUM?

Hi

What is the correct procedure to upgrade from 6.0U3 to 6.5U1? I would prefer via VUM but there is no such patch/rollup available directly. Also patch center does not have any patches for that.

I know I could upload (vendor provided) .iso -image to VUM and do the host upgrade that way, but I would prefer patching instead.

What method you have used?

Edit: this is a four host VSAN cluster.

Patches and updates are for same editions within itself, like patches 4,5 for esxi 6.0.x or update 2 or 3 for 6.0.x, When it comes to upgrade from one edition to another, it always done via ISO or offline bundle.

Now either you download ISO or offline bundle, you can upgrade in two way. Either upload one of them to VUM > create baseline > scan > remediate.

Secondly, you can upload offline bundle to a datastore and upgrade host via esxcli https://www.vladan.fr/how-to-upgrade-esxi-6-0-to-esxi-6-5-via-offline-bundle/  Or mount ISO to CD rom device of host and boot from it and follow upgrade steps with preserving VMFS.

Hi ,

For VSAN ,  upload the 6.5 iso to vum and patch from there .

Example -

use vcenter 6.5  ,  you have 2 6.0 u3  and single 6.5 u1 .

Do update one by one host using VUM (uploades iso ) , and you can apply necessary changes to VSAN cluster  configuration .
