Windows Server 2008 guest having problems accessing RDM physical SATA drive

I have installed a 4TB SATA drive in my ESXI 6.5 host - all Dell Optiplex 3010. I have created an RDM, and added it (using VSphere client) to my Windows Server 2008 guest. I formatted the drive (NTFS) from within the guest O/S, assigned it a drive letter of K:, and copied across a large amount of data to it. Yesterday all seemed well. Today the K: drive is not visible from within the guest O/S. Windows Disk Manager shows the drive as a Basic Disk with 1678.02GB capacity (not the actual 4TB capacity). It shows no partitions - the capacity is all unallocated.

The Hardware section for the guest VM in vSphere shows the disk as "Mapped Raw LUN", with compatibility mode "Physical".

Any idea what might have happened, why the partition is no longer accessible, and why the physical capacity of the drive is being misrepresented in Disk Manager?
