How to extend VMDK that is utilized on MSCS-in-a-box.

Hello,

I'm having trouble seeing anyone posting with this specific issue. We currently have a Microsoft 2012 Cluster in a box scenario. One of the drives need extended, but it fails with the following error: The disk extend operation failed: the virtual disk requires a feature not supported by this program. Hot-extend is currently supported only for VMFS flat virtual disks without snapshots opened in persistent mode.

The VMDKs are thick eager zeroed utilizing LSI Logic SAS with SCSI bus sharing set to Virtual, and are way under the 2TB size. There are no snapshots of the VMs in question.

To extend a earger zeroed disk from and used by MSCS cluster, you will need to shutdown your MSCS nodes and extended the virtual disk size from command line, see: Extending an EagerZeroedThick Disk - VMware vSphere Blog

Shutdown both the VM's shared with disk and try expanding it should work.

When vmdk's are shared and if the scsi controller is in physical mode and disk are independent mode you can't expand the vmdk using vsphere client or using web client.

You need to shutdown both the VM's and try expanding it should work.

Thanks
