Mixing 1U and 2U Servers in the Same Rack

Working on a design for VCF using Dell Ready Nodes. What I would like to do in make the first 4 servers in each rack R630s for the management domain and the rest R730xds for the server workloads. My questions are:

  • Is this a supported configuration?
  • If so, how does it impact the number of nodes allowed in the rack? i.e. Could I still have 16 of the R730xd servers in the rack in addition to the 4 R630s?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Hi cehrenwerth -

Today, all servers within a single rack must be homogenous qualified vSAN Ready Nodes. Between racks, they may be heterogeneous servers.

As such, today it's not supported to use one model/config for management and another for workload domains within the same rack.

Similar feedback has been provided to our product management and engineering teams.

The upcoming VMware Cloud Foundation 2.3 release will allow mixing different server models in a rack. Just make sure all servers are on the VMware Compatibility Guide for VCF.
