Unable to mount downloaded VMDK - datastore not stating its a virtual disk

I have a datastore with several VMs for which I can download the VMDK to my workstation and mount them easily.

Problem is for one VM (which is working perfectly) I face the following,

  • The datastore browser takes longer than average to open its folder (other folders opens instantly)
  • The VMDK file is not stated as "virtual Disk" like in other VMs
  • I can see the -flat.vmdk file in the datastore, unlike with other VMs where I cannot see the -flat expect after downloading.
  • When I download the vmdk, I'm unable to mount it on Windows and it says not recognized.

Any ideas?

If you can see flat.vmdk AND the descriptor vmdk in Datastorebrowser this means:
- the "createType" parameter of the vmdk descriptor is not VMFS
- the path referenced in the extent description of the descriptor does not match the flat.vmdk
- there is another syntax error in the descriptorfile
- the descriptor maybe corrupt
- the flat.vmdk does not match the expected size

For troubleshooting please post the size of the flat.vmdk in bytes and attach the descriptor.vmdk
