Moving a CD with the VM to another datastore

Imagine an ESXi 5.5 host member of a vSphete infrastructure.

The ESXi host is connected to 2 different datastores, let's say Datastore1 and Datastore2.

On Datastore1 a VM botts from an .iso image stored in folder ISO in Datastore1.

I need to move the VM to Datastore2 and to move the .iso image as well.

On Datastore2 I have an ISO folder with a copy of the .iso image.

Is there any way to move the VM from Datastore1 to Datastore2 and to make it use the .iso image in Datastore2 without powering it off?

Regards

Hi Marius,

Shouldn't be an issue if the backing ISO is on shared storage; you should be able to;

1) Storage vMotion the Virtual Machine to Datastore 2 (vMotion Change Datastore)

2) Copy the ISO to the new Datastore 2

3) Edit the VM Properties and select the ISO on the new Datastore 2

4) Remove the copy of the ISO on Datastore 1

What version/licence edition of vSphere ?

Kind regards,

Adrian

as a option you can download the ISO and copy to the other datastore or you  can use winscp.

storage vmotion will not change the pointer file of the CD image though same iso is available in the destination datastore, still it will point to the DS1. In this scenario, only possible way is to migrate vm data and iso image manually and repointing the iso.

you may check if content library option helps you in this scenario
