Closing Window after VM has shut down

    stattman Lurker

      Hi Community,

Hopefully an easy one to answer. I'm using Mac OSX Sierra and Fusion 8.5.6.

When I shut down my Windows 10 VM because I run it in a large window (not full screen). I'm left with a large window with a big play button.

It's a bit fiddly as I need to close it and I can go back to the main Fusion App and then start another VM.

Is there a way for Fusion to auto-close the Window of the Guest OS when it's shut down?

      Thanks for any advice

      Kind Regards

      Mark

          Hi Mark,

Welcome at the VMware Communities forum.

As far as I am aware there is no such setting, at least I have never seen one and I've been using VMware Fusion since version 1.

Would be interested to hear if such an option exists.

FWIW you can use Command+W to close the window if you would not like to use a mouse.

Thanks. Command-W is good. I'm still trying to get used to the short-cuts so that's helpful.

Also note that if you select File close -when your VM is still running- that you can have the VM shutdown (or suspend) and the window close at the same time.

You can customize the behavior on what it should via the preferences.

Eg. VMware Fusion -> Preferences -> General -> When Closing a virtual machine :

              - Suspend

              - Power Off

              - Confirm before closing

So you can select close and it will immediately close the window as well.

When VMware Tools is running it will do a graceful shutdown.

If VMware Tools is not running (or is misbehaving so that it does not appear to be running) then the VM will be shut down hard (like pulling the power cable in the physical world)

So that would almost be what you ask, except that the workflow is a bit different.
