Power on Error - Virtual Machine needs authorization.

Hi:

My first time here and first time using VMware. I have Windows 8.1 host and installed Ubuntu 16.04.2 guest into VMware  12.5.5. I followed the Easy set-up. All went well until I clicked "Power on". I waited a while and finally appeared  an error box saying:

Error while powering on: VMware Player cannot connect to the virtual machine. Make sure you have rights to run the program, access all directories the program uses, and access all directories for temporary files.

The VMware Authorization Service is not running.

Error while powering on: VMware Player cannot connect to the virtual machine. Make sure you have rights to run the program, access all directories the program uses, and access all directories for temporary files.

I searched the problem. I went to Services.msc and Started VM authorization. Restarted compu.  Tried to Power on again and same error box appeared. I went back to Services.msc and "started" everything beginning with letters VM. There were 4 entries. All were "running". Tried to power on again. Still got the same error.

Can you share the vmware.log located on the same folder where you stored your virtual machine? And do you have Hyper-V installed in your Windows 8.1?

I don't have Hyper-v. First time I hear of it. I could not find a log in the VM folder. I am attaching a screen shot of what is in the folder.

I no longer have a Windows 8.1 host. But when I had one some years back with VMware Workstation would intermittently throw out a similar message when I try to start a VM.

What I'd do is Right Click - Run As Administrator when I start the VMware Workstation software and then the VM powers on fine. I never figured out a root cause and permanent fix. But I just didn't have the time to mess around and plus the fact it didn't always happen.

Perhaps, try the Right Click - Run As Administrator when you start VMware Player and see if that works around it.

Thank you very much, but where do you right click in order to select "run as administrator".

I have been tinkering trying to get Administrator privileges as the error message recommends and finally got a log for you before running into another deadlock. Here is the log. I hope it helps you. Thank you for trying to help me.

Hi,

You should not have to run "as administrator" and running your vmware player like that is not a fix.

There are times when vmware player might need elevated rights, but that is not for running a normal VM.

A few remarks.

Your screenshot of the ubuntu VM does not have ubuntu installed.

Why? Because the disk (the .vmdk file) is only 2MB in size while it should be at least a couple of gigabytes in size.

Also your .log file ends with this:

2017-04-19T09:05:49.388-05:00| mks| I125: MsgHint: msg.keyboardHook.hookTimeout

2017-04-19T09:05:49.388-05:00| mks| I125+ The keyboard hook timeout value is not set to the value recommended by VMware Player. This can cause keystrokes to be lost when the host is under stress. We recommend that you allow this application to update the value.  Once this value is updated, you must log out and log in again in order to have the value take effect.

2017-04-19T09:05:49.388-05:00| mks| I125+ Click "OK" to update the value, "Cancel" to leave it unchanged.

2017-04-19T09:05:49.388-05:00| mks| I125+ ---------------------------------------

2017-04-19T09:10:22.791-05:00| WinNotifyThread| I125: Suspending VM from WM_ENDSESSION: Ubuntu 16.04.2  i386  32 Bit

2017-04-19T09:10:52.791-05:00| WinNotifyThread| W115: Giving up on suspending VM for WM_ENDSESSION

That the keyboard hook time is not correct is not quite normal either.

Did you see that message popup?

Did you logout after that?

I'm not familiar with this error myself.

But I did see this post after a quick search:

How do you set the keyboard hook timeout value for VMware Workstation for Windows? - Super User

The installation stops and never asks for keyboard info. Suddenly the VM playstation shows up. I try to power on and the Error appears. The VM playstation opens the iso and begins the installation but stops in the middle of the installation. Not a Administration problem, U correct. If an Admin. problem it would never open the iso . Screen shots sent.

Hi,

Can't open your first attachment, second screenshot is like the first screenshot. The VM has no data.

You might want to try the registry edit that was suggested in the super user article I linked to.

The only other suggestion I have at this moment is trying to reinstall VMware Player (make sure to download latest version)

Hi:

I have never seen any pop-up regards to keyboard hook-up time.

I started from scratch again. I uninstalled VMware. I double checked the MD5 of the Ubuntu iso download and it was good. I downloaded a VMware Workstation 12.5.5 for 64Bit Windows OS. https://my.vmware.com/en/web/vmware/free#desktop_end_user_computing/vmware_workstation_player/12_0

All went well during the installations.  No pop-ups appeared. The playstation screen was blacked out during the iso installation into playstation. Suddenly I see Ubuntu appear in the left panel, I clicked  power on and then the administrator  rights pop-up appears. I went to the VM folder and again very few files from the iso were there.

I went to the link you sent on superuser. I didn’t see anything related to my problem. I was hoping I could of gotten to see VMware working. Thank you for trying to help me.
