Been using workstation for 2-3 years now on version 12.
This week for some unknown reason, and I don't think I've updated Windows in that time (windows 7 Pro - is the host machine 16GB ram).
Since the start of this week my XP Vms have been running so slow a to be unusable.
I move a slow Xp VM to another Host and it works as expected, and as it used to on my main machine.
I've upgraded Workstation, un-installed and re-installed it.
Reduced processors in the Vm from 2 to 1.
Re-installed VM Tools (which take about 3 hours!!).
This only seems to affect XP VMs my others Win7 and Win10 work as before.
I've spend 3 days on this now and it's driving me mad.
Taskmanager on the running XP Vms shows 100% CPU and 0% Idle the majority of usage (40%-80% on Taskmgr)
Please help
Please check the link below, it has updated information which was a solution for my issue.
It was AVG which was the culprit in my case.
Hi,
XP VM suddenly slow, Win 7 fine
In short both Avast and AVG antivirus have problems with virtual machines since about a week or so.

Thanks for the reply, sorry I started another thread, I did look for ages before I posted.
I am using AVG, on both the Host and VMs.
Hi,
That's all right. I thought I recognized your name from somewhere.
The other post you participated in was apparently resolved by uninstalling AVG.
Guess that's the first thing to try.
Alternatively if you have a paid AVG subscription, then you might try contacting AVG.
edit: I see you found the solution: https://communities.vmware.com/thread/553759#2664564
Thanks for those screenshots, they are helpful for explaining the way to resolve to the next person bumping into this.

I also have severe performance problems with XP guests. Since upgrading from Workstation 10 to 12 [I have the latest 12.5.5 Pro], it literally takes 5 minutes to boot into a basic XP VM [no added software other than VMware tools]. Doesn't matter safe mode or normal, the boot time is roughly the same. 30+ seconds to open the control panel, etc. I have tried (re)setting the video driver [suggested somewhere] and uninstalling/reinstalling VMware tools a couple of times on this basic system ... it takes over 2 HOURS to do even this simple task. I have a few more complex XP environments that now are completely unusable.
I have Win7, Win10, and a couple of different Linux environments all running fine - I upgraded specifically to run Win10. My only issues are with 32-bit XP.
The host is Win7 Home, 64-bit with 16GB RAM.
