Solved: VMware tools 10.1.5 for Linux doesn't update with 12.5.3 / 12.5.4 update

I had an infuriating problem on VMware Workstation 12.5.3/4, where VMware tools for Linux 10.1.5 wouldn't install.

The error was "Error: There was a problem updating a software component.   Try again later and if the problem persists, contact VMware support or your system administrator."

The problem was a previous installation of the tools had the ISO image manually mounted but not connected in the VM's properties.

I de-selected the "Connect at startup" checkbox and set the connection to "Use physical drive", and clicked OK.

The upgrade succeeded after pausing the VM, restarting VMware Workstation, and checking for updates and letting the tools install.

I'm betting powering off the VM would also work.

I have the same problem but this did not fix the issue for me.  Thanks for posting it though.

Same here...I even removed the CD option from hardware and still have the issue.
