From what I've read HA & vMotion traffic only flows between the hosts.
This traffic doesn't have to communicate with anything else.
Therefore if you had 2 hosts you could send such traffic over a dedicated cable between the 2 no need for switches?

You may connect two hosts with cross over cable and perform vmotion. Ensure you have proper settings on host and validate the connectivity accordingly

Can HA traffic also be setup in the same way?
Yes, just you have to check vmotion and HA in the vmkernel port group accordingly.
Perform a test and check if it works fine after you complete the implementation.
