Automate VM creation: Copy VMX/vmdk

So we deploy Workstation 12.5 via SCCM.

I have been asked to script/deploy various VM configurations... Basically automate the new vm wizard only.

Since we also manage our imaging process via SCCM as well, we are NOT looking for a template/sysprep prestagged VM for this.

Instead I am really just looking for a way to create a basic VM object by selecting OS, disk size, CDrom ISO path etc.  The customer will be able to image what ever OS they wish themselves once they boot it up via SCCM.

So far I have found if I just copy the VMX and VMDK files from one of these "shell" VMs it seems to open/launch a new object properly, Bridged NIC gets a new MAC etc.

I was wondering if there is harm in just copying those files or if there is a better way to do this?
