How to configure the resolution of a Debian 8.6.0 Virtual Machine

Fresh install of Debian 8.6.0 KDE starts with a 640x480 display which changes during boot to 800x600. Physical hardware is Asus P8Z77-M Pro motherboard with i7-3770 CPU, 32 GB Ram, 2x2TB Disk, Samsung S27B970D Display at 1920x1024, running 64-bit Windows 10 Pro.

How to configure the resolution of the Debian Virtual Machine?

Attempted to install VMWare tools, but at the end the instructions stated to install Open VM Tools instead. So I did. After booting and going to System Settings, Display, Display Configuration, I noticed (totally by fumbling around) that the third icon (at the far right) in the little screen offered multiple resolution settings, none of which matched my monitor (1920x1080 a popular HD standard), but chose 1680x1050 which is much better than 800x600. I will consider this answered.
