vmware tools vs. open vm tools? linux

Hi,

everytime I install a Linux distribution I'm struggling between choosing vmware tools or open vm tools.

Everyone is writing that open vm tools are the right choice. But for example shared folders doesn't work quite good, so I have to install the vmware tools over open-vm-tools.

And with every new vmware fusion release (actual 8.5.3) VMWare is installing new vmware tools drivers.

could anybody help what's the right way to choose?

Hi,

The correct answer should be "open vm tools", but as you say there are constantly issues and as a result at this stage there is no "one size fits all" recommendation.

The distribution should provide you with the vmware tools that work best with their software.

Unfortunately however sometimes there are problems and some distributions are really slow in incorporating patches, some even postpone patching existing fixes in current versions and wait until next upgrade (I'm looking at you ubuntu)

So in case of problems you better end up using the tools as provided by VMware.

This will get better over time.
