Connecting ESXi 6.5 to a Vcenter VCSA 6.0 u2 ?

Hi !

I thought I could connect an ESXi 6.5 to a 6.0 Vcenter, was I wrong ? I thought between major version it was possible ?

Each time I try I got an error in vsphere client :

"timeout waiting for vpxa to start"

and on the host in vpxa.log I got :

2016-11-24T15:49:06.036Z error vpxa[AD6DB70] [Originator@6876 sub=SoapAdapter] Unsupported version URIurn:vpxa3/6.0"

To be able to manage vSphere ESXi 6.5 you will need your vCenter at version 6.5, see the interoperability matrix: VMware Product Interoperability Matrixes

vCenter 6.0 U2 can not manage ESXi 6.5. However vCenter 6.5 can manage ESXI 6.0 U2. Same logic applies to ESXi/VC releases.

Also if VC is 6.0 GA and ESXI 6.0 U2, this works.

Guess I'll have to upgade my VCSA before upgrading my others ESX  xD

I usually update my VC before the ESX, but I received a new ESX so I wanted to gain time and install it in 6.5 instead of 6.0, my bad.

Thanks for the answers guys !

Hi ,

In VMware environment , you can add / manage only host with lower version / same version of vCenter Server .

  • Older versions of vCenter Server cannot manage newer versions of ESXi. It is not forward compatible. For example ESXi 5.5 cannot be managed by vCenter server 5.0 or 5.1.
