VCSA 6.0 Update 2 Appliance using VMWare Update Manager on external SQL box

Hello!

We recently setup, a VCSA 6.0 Update 2 Appliance (External PSC installation) we wish to use VUM 6.0 Update 2 installed on a Windows 2008 Server, and have it connect to a database that resides on a SQL 2012 server.

I'm having troubles finding a guide on how to setup VUM using a external database while also running a VCSA Appliance configured to use its PostGre (I believe?) database thats created when VCSA is built.

The article i'm referencing is the following: http://pubs.vmware.com/vsp40/wwhelp/wwhimpl/js/html/wwhelp.htm#href=install/t_configure_a_sql_server...

I'm confused on how to actually go about this in a way where I can use VUM w/ SQL 2012 DB server, while using VCSA's built in database method.

If someone has a guide or article that would be great, thanks!

VUM uses its own database and it needs te be an Oracle or SQL database. You cannot use the VCSA builtin database.

The steps to install VUM are described in the vSphere 6 documentation and specifically in the section Installing and Administering VMware vSphere Update Manager, vSphere 6.0 Documentation Center

Hi,

On that Windows 2007 you wither use a SQL Express, or a SQL Server to install that VUM. Or if you have any Oracle DB that you could connect to.

But the easy way should have a SQL Express on that Windows 2008.

Hi ,

I believe this is what your requirement.

You have VCSA 6.0U2, SQL 2012 DB system, you want to install VUM connecting DB which is on other system.

1. Create 32-bit DSN on VUM system pointing to the SQL DB system using SQL native client.

2. Install VUM using DSN created above

You can refer to document: http://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-60/topic/com.vmware.ICbase/PDF/vsphere-update-manager-601-install-adm...

And refer to "Preparing the Update Manager Database" section. Its easy to follow.
