Fusion 8.x and Sierra issues, Internal Error

I have two Macs, a 2015 MBP, and a 2013 Mac Pro.  Both were running Fusion 8.1.1 on El Capitan, with nary a problem.  I have a total of 6 VM's of different varieties, two on the MBP (OSX 10.10.5 and Debian 8), and four on the Mac Pro (OSX 10.9.5, 10.10.5, 10.11.6, and Windows 10 with the new edition upgrade).  All of these were working flawlessly on El Capitan, with Fusion 8.1.1.

Now I have upgraded both machines to Sierra, and installed Fusion 8.5.0.  Every one of my virtual machines gives the "Internal Error" message when I try to run it.  I completely uninstalled 8.5.0 on both machines (tracked down every little file that VMWare leaves behind and deleted it), and then installed Fusion 8.1.1 on both machines.  I get the same "Internal Error" when trying to run any of my VM's.  It seems there is some issue between Fusion 8.x and Sierra.  Strange that the behavior is identical on two different pieces of hardware that I have here.

While I still had 8.5.0 installed, I also tried creating a new VM, from an OSX installer app bundle (10.11.6).  This went through the motions of setting up a VM, options and all, but when I click the run button, again the "Internal Error".

Searching for help on this leads to lots of reports of 8.5.0 crashing on Sierra, and lots of old (some very old) reports of the "Internal Error" and what was done in those cases to solve it.  It is not 3D Acceleration.  That is already turned off on all of my VM's.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I might try beyond what I have done already?  There don't seem to be enough reports of just a general failure of Fusion to run on Sierra to indicate it is widespread, but it is happening to me on two different machines (different in many ways, hardware-wise).  Thanks for any suggestions.

Hello Henry,

Welcome at the VMware  communities forum.

You might already have tried, but the initial troubleshooting step when this happens is a reboot of the host.

If that isn't helping then another possibility for the error might be antivirus or antimalware interfering.

It doesn't help much bar the "it can work" statement, but down here Fusion 8.5 works fine on macOS Sierra.

I have the same problem as Henry. VM's work fine in 8.1.1 & 8.5 on El Capitan; but randomly crash on Sierra with the 'Internal Error' message.

Mostly happens when resuming a suspended VM; but will also happen on cold start of a VM.

It is not 3D acceleration, and restarting the host does not help.

Here some of the details from the log from a crash this morning (guest is WIndows 10).

Hi philmoz,

Could you please attach the full vmware.log, and also the macOS crash report which should be in your system's /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports -- or launch Console and look under System Diagnostic Reports and the same crash report should appear there too.  (To attach the files, just use the Attach link in the lower-right corner when composing a reply.)

Thanks.  From your vmware-vmx_2016-09-27-065442_MBP15.crash, the failure was in:

Thread 0 Crashed:: Dispatch queue: RawCameraSupport Queue

This failure has only started occurring with the arrival of macOS Sierra, and we're working with Apple to understand what's failing and why.  Depending on the outcome of that investigation, you might need to wait for either an update from Apple or an updated version of Fusion to resolve the issue.

So probably related to the other Sierra bug you have, where starting Fusion kills the built in camera.

I don't use the camera in any VM's - is there any way to turn this off completely until you fix it so it stops crashing and I can at least use the camera in the host OS?

I don't yet have an explanation as to why the RawCameraSupport thread is active even for virtual machines configured with no camera support... It might be activated by some other audiovisual component, so maybe removing the VM's sound card might help...?  I don't know... I'm just guessing here.

Yesterday I installed Sierra 10.12.1 beta 2 (developer preview build 16B2333a).

So far I have not had any more 'Internal Error' crashes with any of my VM's.

The camera is still broken, hopefully there will be a fix for this soon from VMware.

I think I may be encountering this, too. The symptoms sound similar, but I cannot be sure it is the same issue.

This has affected Windows and Linux guests.

I am now trying with: Compatability -> Advanced Options -> Use Hardware Version -> 11

I am cautiously optimistic that the above option may have prevented the issue, but I shall continue monitoring this to be sure.

I was hopeful that I had found a solution, but apparently not:

I'm concerned about possible data loss. Which is the safest option to choose if that dialog appears?

I am experiencing the same error, pretty much consistently on running Windows 10 guest on the same host (Sierra with VMware Fusion 8.5).

I also have a Windows 7 guest and some Linux distros which run just fine.

I noticed that clicking on Restart Windows, will somehow boot Windows and the system run stable.

I wish the error can get fixed.

Best

This is frustrating.  I rely on Fusion for work.  My Windows 7 guest keeps crashing since the upgrade to 8.5.0.  I get the same dialog box.  However unlike previous posts here, I was running the previous version of Fusion on macOS Sierra and it was stable.  I started getting these crashes only upon the upgrade to Fusion 8.5.0.  I run multiple desktops so I wasn't sure if my problem was related to the mouse-grabbing crash described in the Fusion 8.5.0 release notes.

I am running a MacBook Pro Retina Mid 2012, macOS Sierra 10.12, and (trying to run) Fusion 8.5.0.  The previous version of Fusion ran fine on THIS version of macOS, since the release of 10.12.

It is so disheartening to read that removing 8.5.0 and reinstalling the previous version of Fusion doesn't fix the problem.

Hi Botnik,

It is so disheartening to read that removing 8.5.0 and reinstalling the previous version of Fusion doesn't fix the problem.

Be aware that this type of software depends on many factors and that bugs might look like they are the same might end up just being similar in that they show the same symptoms but have different origins on why the problem happens.

To illustrate.

In this thread there's people who have problems because of the particular hardware model having a specific camera.

There's people who report reinstalling 8.5 works and in other threads I read it did not help..

Some here report that removing the usb controller from their VM or changing it from USB3 to USB2 helped.. for others it doesn't work..

So even if the top post mentions that reinstalling 8.1 did not fix it for them, this might in fact work for you.

For the record, if you do want to go down that path then I suggest to reboot your host after uninstall Fusion 8.5 to make sure the kernel modules from Fusion 8.5 are actually unloaded before installing Fusion 8.1.

Same problem, all my Windows VM's are giving this error after 8.5 was installed.

Does VMWare not read forums?  Is completely ignoring the problem wise VMWare employees?

Hello Thomas_McKane,

Sorry to hear about your problems. VMware certainly is not ignoring you (and BTW, if not clear, I'm not from VMware)

As one of the first respondents in this thread there's Darius, who is a VMware employee.

If you want VMware to actually look at your problem you will need to supply more info as just chiming in with a "me too".

A good start usually is to supply a vmware.log file from the folder of your virtual machine.

An even better help is to supply a complete support bundle.

You can also open a support ticket if you rather handle this directly with VMware.

For your information, the Community Forum is not an official support-forum and is not officially monitored by VMware Support or Product Managers.

This is a community based forum where VMware Fusion users help other users.

As a side note there are VMware employees who keep an eye on the forums and try to help out, but they might not see every post and most - if not all of them - are doing so in their own free time.

To get official support please go to: Fusion Support and open a ticket at File a Support Request

hope this helps,
