Player crashes on load with u16.04

Hi,

I've upgraded two of our desktops to Ubuntu 16.04 and I can't get VMWare Workstation Player 12.1.1 to run.

Running it in a console I get the following output:

Hi,

The theme engine errors are a red herring, expected and non harmful.

The crash in on VMware player trying to download vmware tools.

You might want to check that no proxy server settings have been set in VMware Player settings.

Thank you. Not that I've solved it yet but I'm hoping it leads somewhere.

I don't think I've ever set a proxy ever. Maybe once or twice back in uni.

Is there any other plausible contenders for causing the DL to fail? Maybe a missing tool, wrong folder permissions, etc?

Is there an easy way to disable the attempted download? I can't do it any GUI way as I never get access to a GUI.

Hi,

Ok, let's see what happens if we try to get rid of the libcanberra issue.

Try to run:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install libcanberra-gtk3-module

Then try the previous command from the other thread again.

libcanberra-gtk3-module is all ready the newest version.....

I think I had attempted to get rid of those warnings some previous time (just to be less annoying when occasionally running from the console).

Hi,

Not without testing, I'm installing a Ubuntu 16.04 system down here atm and will report back if I can reproduce your issue.

Note however that "I'm just somebody trying to help out" and not affiliated with or working for VMware, so it might be a bit before I come back as I have real work to do as well. Smiley Wink

Hi,

I installed a fresh Ubuntu 16.04 (x64), completely updated that, download and installed latest vmware player and that worked out of the box.

Then I updated the kernel to the latest, rebooted Ubuntu 16.04, ran VMware Player again and -after it recompiled the kernel modules- it did bring up the user interface again as expected.

I do see the same warning messages as you, but not a "signal 11" error.

The GUI works.

What do you see for ldd on vmware player?

Eg. I get this (ran as root):

# ldd /usr/lib/vmware/bin/vmplayer

    linux-vdso.so.1 =>  (0x00007ffdfd2d5000)

    libdl.so.2 => /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libdl.so.2 (0x00007f273077e000)

    libpthread.so.0 => /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libpthread.so.0 (0x00007f2730561000)

    libz.so.1 => /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libz.so.1 (0x00007f2730346000)

    libgcc_s.so.1 => /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libgcc_s.so.1 (0x00007f2730130000)

    libc.so.6 => /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libc.so.6 (0x00007f272fd67000)

    /lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 (0x0000555c04e96000)

What is the output of the cpu info?

(cat /proc/cpuinfo )

You might also want to try to run an strace

As a normal user just run:

strace vmplayer

It's noisy, but it might give more insight in where the player crashes.

Also, not quite sure if you've done what I would have done in your case, -- reinstall.

But have you tried to uninstall vmware player and re-install vmware player (with a reboot inbetween, although that should not be needed)

Thank you for the above and beyond help. What is going to be a bit frustrating is that today everything appears to be working perfectly. Doing the strace vmplayer it ran perfectly, did the gui kernel module update and then finished loading the gui. My Windows 7 VM just ran it's updates and then I shut it down cleanly Smiley Happy

So I know that the following kernel is happy:

Linux gareth-linux 4.5.7-040507-generic #201606100436 SMP Fri Jun 10 08:38:43 UTC 2016 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

What I don't know is which of the many various updates I've done since last attempting to run it fixed things..... Smiley Sad

I was previously running a 4.5.4 kernel, but I had seen the same issue on another machine with 16.04 in the office. Hah ha! I can narrow it down a little by updating that pc without updating the kernel and see if that fixes it then see if the kernel fixes it Smiley Happy

Plan is underway.

It is always good to know what causes a certain problem in order to be able to prevent it, but .... even if it "just starts working" is good too.

It's a lot better then banging your head against the wall, so I'm glad to hear that at least one of your system works again.

Of course I'm still interested in hearing your findings with the other machine, so keep us posted.
