Urgetnt! Disk Space is going to be full

Hello,

I am using Vmware Workstation 11 in Windows Server 2008 R2. I have installed Mail Server in Win Server 2012 R2 inside Vmware 11. There is 35 GB free disk space in Win 2012 R2, though it shows 8 GB free disk space in Win 2008 R2. I am attaching screenshots of both of them.

Could you please help me why this is happening and how to make free space?

Thanks in advance.

Do you have any other VM storage on the same disk on Windows Server 2008 R2 ? Anyway, take in mind that looks like you provisioned your VM with a virtual disk of ~84,9GB and that the drive E: on your Windows Server 2008 R2 have ~85.9GB, so if all space inside the guest OS is utilized, you will have only ~1GB free on drive E: of your Windows Server 2008 R2. But, your issue is that deleting space inside the Windows Server 2012 R2 will not "release" the space on Windows Server 2008 R2, so even if you have 35GB free inside the Windows server 2012 R2 it will may not reflect on your Windows Server 2008 R2.

There is no other virtual machines in the same disk, only mail server exists. In this situation there is no solution to solve this issue? I mean to reflect the free space 35GB in Win 2012 to be same in Win 2008 E disk.

If the VM has vmware-tools installed it has a "shrink function".
In previous versions this option was exposed in the GUI but it has been removed recently.
Check the documentation for WS 11 how to run the shrink function - it is supposed to reduce the size of the growing vmdk-types and should exactly do what you want.

Thanks for coming to Workstation community.

To clean the disk used in VM, you can try to power off the VM and clean up disk by "right click the VM -> Manage -> Clean up disks".
