network speed difference

hi,

I am having a strange problem.

when i am copying a file to another server from esxi console i am having a slow speed but when i am copying a same file from a virtual mahine on a same host i am getting a different speed.

All the underlying network is same. my management and VLAN settings are same. my management (esxi management console ) are using same NICS even.

why is this difference...

Is the management vmkernel interface on the same vSwitch and VLAN as the VM to which you are copying data?  If so, the faster speed of the VM is because the data does not leave the host.  The data path is layer 2 within the vSwitch.

First of all thank to you reply,

no, my target is separate physical linux host.

Both my VM and management console are on a same physical NIC.

Any idea what is stopping esxi management console to not give a same speed?

What are you using to copy off the ESXi host, e.g. scp, and what are you using to copy of the VM?

What are the size of the files you are copying and how long is it taking in both cases?

So, just to confirm, the copying runs fast when its local, and you see performance drop when you are copying across the hosts, correct?

hello,

no, when i SCP to tartget form service console (management console) of ESXi to another server it is slow and when i try to copy from the same host but a residing vm on the same host the performance increased.

my target is the same.

There is only one nic in the host so there is no way that is using different NIC.

Is that IPv6 has enabled on the host?

Are you using the Network I/O control ? If yes, told us the current configuration.

no, there is no network I/O control.

I am having tagging in placed and according to network administrator there is no throttling on any port.

so all the settings on physical side are the same.
