Workstation 12 Pro: No 3D support is available from the host. The 3D features of the virtual machine will be disabled.

I have setup a new Windows 7 Ultimate and a new Guest Windows 7 Ultimate, both inclusive all updates and VMWare Tools installed.

When starting the Guest OS I see the following error message:

No 3D support is available from the host. The 3D features of the virtual machine will be disabled.

dxdiag on the host shows:

I searched for tips, but didn't found any.

What is a possible cause, that I don't have 3D support in my Guest system?

Before Workstation Pro 12, we use D3D render, it can work with your graphic card.

Or you just modify your vmx file by adding the following lines:

mks.enableD3DRenderer = TRUE

mks.enableDX11Renderer = FALSE

This disables DX11 Renderer and enables D3D Renderer that will give you limited 3D in the guest.

Hi,

Thanks for using WS,

From the logs it looks that your card can not support DX11Renderer. -- your Graphics cards' DDI version is 10

It only supports D3D10 and we, at the very minimum, require D3D10.1 (and really anything below 11 will not work very well).---which means that you need Graphics card whose DDI Version equal or greater than 10.1

If you want to run 3D applications in the guest, you will need to upgrade to a GPU that supports D3D11 API with feature level 10.1 or better.

As a temporary measure, specify the following VMX config options.

  • mks.enableD3DRenderer = TRUE
  • mks.enableDX11Renderer = FALSE

Thanks

All I read on VMWare Homepage it says WS 12 Pro can use DirectX 10, not 10.1. It would have saved me a long time trying and searching for clues.

Compare VMware Workstation 11 to VMware Workstation 9 and 10 and VMware Player Pro | VMware United K...

Is there another older VMWare Workstation version capable of 3D, with DirectX 10 (not 10.1) ?
