exporting vmdk

Hi, we have an existing vmware setup. I just like to know how do you export out of the datastore the vmdk or image file of one of the servers? My objective is to use this as a testing environment on a different machine.

Thanks

Jeff

Hi Jeff,

If you need just the .vmdk, simply browse the datastore and download the file to your PC. If you need the whole VM, then you may want to export it as a OVF template from vCenter.

hello jeff,

You can:

Browse the datastore where this VM resides

Select the VMDK required and select download to local drive

Once saved, you can create a new VM, and attach this drive.

If you want to test a virtual machine that is similar to the original one, you can simply clone it.

If you export to OVF you can deploy N number of VMs from the OVF template

However, to export the VM to OVF you will have to power down the VM.
