I'm successfully running Adaptec 71605h (hba = no raid) in our whitebox with 12 SSDs and 4 HDDs. Specify which exact version of 7805 you have, please, there are several revisions and they use different driver - that might be the reason why yours doesn't work.

7805H (= NO RAID, only HBA) class : http://www.adaptec.com/en-us/downloads/vmware/vmware_esxi_5/productid=asa-7805h&dn=adaptec+7805h.php
they are totally different.
