Dear All,
We have a Vcenter for Windows 5.5 server which runs as a VM. All components are installed on this VM except the database wich is on another SQL VM. The operating system of the Vcenter server is Windows 2008 R2.
I like to deploy a new Vcenter Server 6.0 with Win 2012 R2. If possible the database on the same server too. I'm not sure how this is going to work with new Vcenter installer. I think this is called now embedded controller with Postgre SQL database.
Is it possible to build a new Vcenter 6.0 server and migrate the SQL database? We have also a View environment. We have only the compser on the Vcenter server installed.
Thanks,
Edy
you can perform this activity either my using the upgrade option , which will seamlessly work with proper steps and considerations based on your environment
follow the feature walk through steps with the step by step instruction for the embedded installation
else the other thing which you wanted to do , Build a new vcenter and migrate the database ,
Make sure you migrate all the attributes , VDS (if applicable ) , network settings, port groups , Storage settings , manually to the new one
this process might consume more time and need more attention on the configuration you do it.
Let me know if you require any help ,, All the best
Thanks for your answer. I guess an Vcenter Upgrade would be easier followed upgrade of the Windows Server operating system.
What would you suggest? Upgrading first the OS to Win 2012 R2 (in-place) or first Vcenter to 6.0?
Thanks,
Edy
In place upgrade will not have any issue with the vcenter server , make sure you have the complete back up of the server before the OS upgrade ,
the management console will not be accessible during the maintenance window .
