      Hello Studio Community,

As many of you know, Studio has not been updated since 2.6 was released on 2012-03-08. As it stands today, VMware has no plans to update 2.6. If you currently use Studio or have used Studio in the past but stopped due to lack of support for updated OSes, etc., please respond to this post.

      1. Do you currently use Studio?
      2. Did you use Studio in the past but stopped due to lack of support?
      3. How \ why does you organization use Studio? What is the value add?
      4. Have you found an alternative? If so, what is the name of this solution?
      5. Which updated features would you most like to see Studio support? RHEL7\CentOS 7, updated Virtual Hardware?
      6. Additional comments or notes

I am gathering this information to get a better understanding of how the lack of Studio updates has effected our user community.

      Regards,

            Hi,

So would just like to backup and echo the thoughts of paulhbeckerj :-)

Been asking the same question for the last couple of years as to why no update via our VMware contacts.

Raj, thanks for posting the question

                1. yes

                2. considering it - due to chrome update i can no longer edit the vm profile, and forced to use ie.

                3. it allows to create a virtual appliance running a java se server, without the need to install on a host machine.

                4. a possible alternative looks like suse studio

                5. the ability to add and update managment pages without the need to deploy a new ova, more ui feature in the web console.

                  Do you currently use Studio?

                  Yes

Did you use Studio in the past but stopped due to lack of support?

Considering it as there are no updates to support new OS, new browsers, new VMWare Products.

How \ why does you organization use Studio? What is the value add?

Automate appliance building an deploy it in production

Reduce time to deploy new servers

Have you found an alternative? If so, what is the name of this solution?

Did not search, but will need in order to use CentOS 7+

Which updated features would you most like to see Studio support? RHEL7\CentOS 7, updated Virtual Hardware?

                  Expecting CentOS-7 support

                  Expecting update in Virtual Hardware

                    Do you currently use Studio?

Yes - every CI build automates building OVAs for QA to test

Did you use Studio in the past but stopped due to lack of support?

Not yet - but I'd like too, no new features, performance is slow

How \ why does you organization use Studio? What is the value add?

Tied into our CI infrastructure to build OVAs for QA to test - product is shipped as virtual appliance

Have you found an alternative? If so, what is the name of this solution?

Not really, we standardized on RHEL/CentOS as the our appliances os, SuSE and Ubuntu have some OS specific options, but I really want a cross platform solution.

Currently moving towards using packer.io - but not yet ready to make the jump

Which updated features would you most like to see Studio support? RHEL7\CentOS 7, updated Virtual Hardware?

Updated OS releases; improved performance so that we use a template to update without needing to rebuild the VM from scratch everytime; improved reliability, we get more build failures in creating the OVAs than in any other part of the build system

                      1. Do you currently use Studio? - Yes, but migrating away
                      2. Did you use Studio in the past but stopped due to lack of support? Lack of support is one reason we're migrating away
                      3. How \ why does you organization use Studio? What is the value add? We use it to produce OVAs that we then deploy to vSphere
                      4. Have you found an alternative? If so, what is the name of this solution? We are looking at packer. It can produce a centos vmx in about 5 minutes from the command line. However, we want to use developer vagrant machines for building and  there seems to be no way to make this work without buying an additional linux vmware workstation license for all developers...who are currently already running vmware fusion. We just want to create ovas.
                      5. Which updated features would you most like to see Studio support? RHEL7\CentOS 7, updated Virtual Hardware?  better support for automated, parameterized builds. don't require a vm to build an ova. don't require vsphere to build an ova.
                      6. Additional comments or notes -- Honestly, I think an official vmware plugin that creates vmx and ovas and deploys to vsphere for osx, windows, and linux would be a wonderful thing to see. It would be a huge bonus to SCM if the plugins didn't require additional software. I'd like to be able to run from a developer vagrant machine.

                        1. Do you currently use Studio? -- yes, but it looks like we will have to do something different
                        2. Did you use Studio in the past but stopped due to lack of support? -- yes
                        3. How \ why does you organization use Studio? What is the value add? -- we create a virtual appliance for managing our fault-tolerant servers.
                        4. Have you found an alternative? If so, what is the name of this solution? -- looking at packer
                        5. Which updated features would you most like to see Studio support? RHEL7\CentOS 7, updated Virtual Hardware?  -- Definitely need CentOS 7.x support.
                        6. Additional comments or notes -- maybe make a VAMI type of interface available as an RPM to be incorporated with VMs that we build by some other means.

Quite pathetic of VMware to just stop supporting a Product without even as much as mentioning any EoL for support or provide an lternative product with atleast simmelar features capabilities regardless whether it's free or not. Expectwed a alot of more from VMware than to just diss one of their own products without even as much as a word... pathetic VMware!

I'll make this short and sweet

                            1. Do you currently use Studio? - NO
                            2. Did you use Studio in the past but stopped due to lack of support? - YES
                            3. How \ why does you organization use Studio? What is the value add? - Not everyone is a Linux admin. So having Vami and integrating it as an appliance made it easy to train new team members.
                            4. Have you found an alternative? If so, what is the name of this solution? - Using turnkey linux at least gives us some basic menu similar to vami.
                            5. Which updated features would you most like to see Studio support? RHEL7\CentOS 7, updated Virtual Hardware? - RHEL/CENTOS7. Better browser support (can't always run IE)
                            6. Additional comments or notes - I expected more people to reply to this thread.

                              1. Do you currently use Studio?
We're trying to - but with no luck.
                              2. Did you use Studio in the past but stopped due to lack of support?
                                Yes - pretty much.
                              3. How \ why does you organization use Studio? What is the value add?
We were able to create a vApp(s) for our applications (OVA/OVF) in automated manner.
                              4. Have you found an alternative? If so, what is the name of this solution?
