Help with screen resolution (3840x2160 native resolution) = tiny guest!

I am running Workstation 11.  I used to run it on an older laptop running Windows 8 which had a lower resolution.

My new laptop is running Windows 10 and has 3840x2160 native resolution.  Just as an example, I'm trying to install Linux off an .iso and when the install screen loads, it's this tiny square in the middle of the guest window. I can't even make out the menu.

I've tried the following:

- autofit/center settings in VMWare Workstation

- changing the guest machine properties to a specific max resolution (such as 1280x1024)  instead of the default setting "use host setting for monitors"

- I even tried lowering the screen resolution of my laptop monitor (and yet somehow this didn't change anything in VMware Workstation)

Everything else on my new laptop runs well at this high resolution except the Battle.Net Game client (it's also tiny) but it seems all other applications I use are able to adapt.

Any ideas?

Thanks
