Problems upgrading Win7 to Win10 in Fusion 8

I have a legal VM running Windows 7 Pro, fully updated with all available updates, etc. and have tried dozens of times now to upgrade it to Windows 10.  I've tried most available suggestions from google searches on the failure, to no avail, so I'm now hoping someone else might have a clue.

Process goes as follows (same using either Windows Update or attaching an ISO)

Upgrade starts, reaches about 25% and then fails with a SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION.

After it restores my Win7 machine, it indicates error 0xC1900101 - 0x2000D

"The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during MIGRATE_DATA operation"

I've tried:

- Removed any unneeded applications and devices

- Disconnect all connected devices, including uninstalling the network card and ensuring not connected

- Disconnected audio and set not to connect when the VM starts

- Reset Windows Update and ensured all updates applied

- Upgrade attempted both via Windows Update and downloaded ISO image

The only error logs I can find suggest the following:

I've seen this a few times... We're still investigating, but try changing the hard disk bus type from SCSI to SATA

VM > Settings > Hard Disk > Advanced > Bus type

I think Fusion 8 is not ready to be released. Fusion 8 is not able to create a Boot Camp Windows 10 machine. To test I placed a Windows 7 image in the Boot Camp partition and determined that Fusion 8 can make a Boot Camp machine. I upgraded to Windows 10, deleted the Boot Camp machine made when the partition was Windows 7, and tried to create a Boot Camp machine for Windows 10. No go with a, "Boot Camp volume preprocessing failed", error. Clearly a Fusion 8 bug is causing my problem and it may be the same bug that is affecting you. I was just about ready to hit the buy button.

I'm on a MBP2012 10.10.5. Which machine are you?

I'm still having issues with the Win 10 upgrade tests. It complains about the VMWare VGA video driver and refuses to install. I thought that would have been fixed in Fusion 8.

Windows 10 Preview worked fine in a Fusion virtual machine off SCSI disks.

But the official version of Windows 10 seems to ship without a SCSI driver.

If you change the HDD disk type to SATA, it will install fine.

VMware have advised in another forum that "The SCSI protocol is faster than SATA when virtualized, doesn’t matter what the physical hardware us underneath which is why we use it by default"

See Trying to Upgrade to Windows 10 on Fusion but hitting the SVGA bug? Here's the simple workaround - V...

Once I had installed Windows 10 by changing the device type of my Windows 7 boot disk to SATA, I installed the SCSI driver that had been working OK on the Windows 10 Preview.

Use the install new controller driver dialogue and select:

LSI Adapter, SAS 3000 series, 8-port with 1068

Then you can change your Windows 10 boot disk back to SCSI and reboot..

I changed the hard disk bus type from SCSI to SATA, but now the Windows 7 VM won't boot (" a problem has been detected"), and can't be "repaired". So that was a non-starter.

The VM has to boot in Windows 7 to use the Windows 10 install iso.

Update: After switching back to SCSI, the Windows 7 VM booted successfully and VMware Tools installed SATA drivers. After that the upgrade to Windows 10 was successful in SATA mode. Now switching back to SCSI in the Windows 10 VM. Thanks for the advice, Mikero.

Update 2: Now it seems I can't boot in SCSI mode because drivers are not present. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling VMware Tools but that didn't do it. How do I install SCSI drivers in Windows 10 / Fusion 8?

Update 3: Making progress. This comment in another thread fixes booting back in SCSI mode. I followed that with uninstalling / reinstalling WMware Tools, but not yet able to drag and drop to / from the Mac Desktop.

I've tried that already... after switching the drive type to SATA it still fails with the same errors.
