Migrate VM

Hi ,

I am really a newbie in the VM world.

My company has a Site Recovery Plan with a 1 way replication.

What I want to do for testing the migration of a VM to another LUN: doing this migration on the recovery site.

Question: can this do any harm to the production site or the replication process? Are there any pitfalls?

you dont mention what prodcut site recovery plan is

vmware SRM or 3th party product

i would create a new vm as test en then add i to your recovery plan to replicate to other site

as test you could let the original vm fail and start the vm on the recovery site

if everything is configured correlty you should be able to use your vm

that way you can take next step to do it with a production vm if you need to test it

make sure you internet line is heavy enough ofcourse

Thanks, Jurgen

We have an Equallogic PS system.

The real purpose of testing is to see what happens when when migrating a VM to another LUN.

We want to migrate - on the production site - a VM to another LUN, but we don't know the possible implications.

Another question that comes up is :

Suppose we do migrate the VM to another LUN on the recovery site, what will happen to the replication process?

sorry don't know equallogic PS system but migrating to other lun on production site wouldn't be a problem normally but keep in mind that there will be some slow response possible from the VM

and if you datastore is available to all your esxi servers(production site or Site recovery) it might fail.

if your network is split up for storage network and management (iSCSI) -> bottleneck possible

if its fiber your fine if your zoning is in order

if its to your site recovery LUN then you need enough bandwith i think

second question depends how you replicate (per VM, per folder, per datastore, per LUN?)

if your replication is on the same LUN that you want to move, then i think your replication process wil be broken.

i use veeam replication so i replicate on VM folder bases and can move my VM to site recovery lun with no problem but keep in mind that you don't really have a recovery plan anymore because its on the same datastore.
