vmware player not sharing firewire 410 audio device

I'm running windows 7 64bit sp1 host machine, vmware player 6.0.4, and guest machine windows xp sp3. I have an m-audio firewaire 410 sound device connected but the windows xp guest can't see the device. I have the firewire 410 (multichannel) listed in vmware as the sound device, I have the m-audio drivers installed in both windows 7 (host) and windows xp (guest). In the uppar right corner of the vmware guest window it shows the audio device as Multichannel (M-Audio FW 410) connected but windows xp does not see the device. It previously saw and used the via sound card I have on the machine motherboard. I can't work out why windows 7 is not sharing the firewire device. Thanks for any pointers.

The XP guest VM is not going to directly see the audio device as a firewire device - it will see it as the emulated Creative Labs' SoundBlaster AudioPCI device, or the VMware HDAudio device.
