Workstation 11 and serious sound issues

I recently upgraded from WS10 to WS11 and my Windows VMs had an considerable decrease in sound quality. The sound was distorted and not clear in my Ubuntu 14.04 LTS 64-bit system.

I have found the KB http://kb.vmware.com/kb/2012007 with instructions to change the Sound/Speaker setting from 16-bit@44100 to 24-bit@44100.

But doing this Workstation 11 crashes and VM is suddenly powered off...

An error message is shown saying: "VMware Workstation unrecoverable error: (vcpu-0) vcpu-0| I120+ Unexpected signal: 11"

And the log file shows this:

I also upgraded from WS 10 to WS 11 and I am experiencing the exact same problem.  Same poor sound in Win7 guest and same crash and log entries if I try the 16-bit@44100 to 24-bit@44100 speaker change.

Host is 64bit Ubuntu/Lubuntu 14.10 and problem guest is 64bit Win7 (Pro).  Sound works perfect in Linux guests. (Lubuntu 64bit 14.10)

Sound is essential to my WS use so if no fix is available I will have to revert to WS 10

TIA

Glenn

A workaround that seemed to work for me is to use  http://sourceforge.net/projects/vmtweaker/  and then change the sound device from hdaudio to es1371

1) Shutdown de Virtual Machine and remove it from Inventory

2) Open the .VMX file and delete the following line:

sound.virtualDev = "hdaudio"

This was sugested by VMware Support and It worked for me.
