VMDK vs VHD, what the advantage of the former?

I am using VMWare Workstation 11 and I see that I can attach a VHD and even install an OS on it. I was also able to clone it and the clone runs fine. Now, are there any advantages to using VMDK over VHD? Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Welcome at the VMware communities forum.

The vmdk disk format is native to Workstation and is the default disk format.

As such you can expect it to be much better supported as the VHD format.

The VHD format is native to Hyper-V and while VMware Workstation can use it you are not helping yourself by staying on a non default format.
