Can i connect a serial modem to a VM? If so, is it a good idea? I have a simple server that needs a modem to dial pager numbers for notification. It would be pretty low volume. I know you can send pages via email, but management says it has to be able to dial as well. I want it to be a VM, but I have a basic HW machine I could use instead if I have to. Any thoughts?
Oh yeah, I am using ESX 2.5.2
I haven't tried it on ESX but on Server I just pointed the Guest's serial port to the host's serial port, in this case, the COM3 Winmodem. So as far as the guest was concerned, it had a "standard modem" so no drivers or configuration, etc.
