Virtual machines migration between host and cluster

HI All,

I want to ask you if it is possible to perform hot migration of virtual machines between standalone host and host connected to cluster. Standalone host is using vswitches, cluster hosts are using distribution switches. All hosts are connected to the same vCenter. Currently i cannot do it using vmotion because I’m getting information that there is no such network on other side.

Is there any workaround?

Regards

Hi,

Check this out: http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=101061...

It's possible but you should do some actions.

vMotion of virtual machines can be done provided the destination host a similar network configuration and hardware configuration( CPU)

This is to ensure that the VM continues to connect on network when migrated to new host.

Two workaround which we can perform now ;

1. Create a new portgroup on the destination host for temporary use until VM is migrated to destination with an uplink capable of handling VM traffic.

Once done we can migrate virtual machine networking to vDS and VM will continue to work on new host vDS switch.

2. Add the existing host to cluster and then migrate network to vDS and then migrate VM's to other host.
