Wireless Adapter not working in VMWare

So, I've had VMWare on my Sony VPCSC laptop for quite a while, predominately for Kali Linux.

On my old machine I had 3 devices listed, eth0, lo and wlan0.

While it's off to repair center, I'm using a temporary Gateway machine, with an Atheros wifi card.

I've installed Kali Linux and Windows 7 in the VMWare environment and am not detecting a wireless card. I've even went into the Virtual Network Editor and switched it from Automatic to the actual device and it's not detecting a wireless card.

I've finally got the NAT fixed (It wouldn't use auto - had to actually select the card) but now I've got connection and no wlan0 in iwconfig or ifconfig.

Which I DID have on my Sony.

This problem is infuriating me. Please help!

**UPDATE:

I now read everywhere it's not possible because it's virtualized.

My question is this..

This Gateway I'm on is a spare computer, my main computer is at Sony's service center. It's a model VPCSC-FM1, on THIS laptop I've never had a problem having a eth0 and wlan0 in VMWare.

Why was it possible to do it on my Sony and not now?

Do you mean that you can see wlan0 in your guest system by ifconfig on you SONY laptop? What type of network mode do you use ? As far as i know, VMware workstaton do not virtualize the wireless card, you can select the guest's network mode to bridge and bind it to your physical wireless card so that the guest will connect with internet through your wireless network, however, in the guest, you can only see the wired network adaptor such as eth0...

Sorry, after re-reading my post and update I can see it's a bit confusing.

Yes, on my (sadly now broken, that I loved, waiting for a check from Sony to purchase a new one) Sony VPCSC(FM1, I believe) it displayed an actual card in Kali or Windows. This is important because using tools like airmon-ng, you can't in virtualized mode.

So, I'm just curious and bewildered as to why my Sony would display an actual wlan and eth connection if it's allegedly not possible.

I most certainly didn't walk around with a USB card and it didn't have dual wireless. Lol.

As to what card it was, I'd have to check when I get home but I believe it was an Intel
