Drag and drop of VM in Workstation 11 (Linux) is not working, and crashed when you use the 'cut' feature

1.

I the past versions, I could drag and drop VM order or put them in folder.

I am using Fedora 21. It is not working (it worked in WKS ver 10).

2.

Also, when you cut (in top menu bar, Edit - >Cut), the VMware GUI crashed!

Core was generated by `/usr/lib/vmware/bin/vmware'.

Program terminated with signal SIGABRT, Aborted.

After it crashes, and before restarting Workstation, find the latest /tmp/vmware-(username)/vmware-ui-*.log and upload it here as an attachment.  (Please don't copy-and-paste it... When composing a reply here, look above the Post Message button and use the Browse... button to attach the file directly.)

Cheers,

Quit Workstation, launch a terminal window, and use the following command to launch Workstation:

   user@host:~$ VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_GTK=yes vmware

See if that helps.

With the env variable set:

1.

Cannot do the drag and drop.

2.

Still crash when doing the cut, attached is the log file.

[dkt@home ~]$ VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_GTK=yes vmware

Unexpected signal: 11.

VMware Workstation Error:

VMware Workstation unrecoverable error: (vmui)

Unexpected signal: 11.

A log file is available in "/tmp/vmware-dkt/vmware-ui-1453.log".

You can request support.

To collect data to submit to VMware support, choose "Collect Support Data" from the Help menu.

You can also run the "vm-support" script in the Workstation folder directly.

We will respond on the basis of your support entitlement.

I don't know if it will make any difference, but try:

   user@host:~$ VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_GTK=force vmware

Still crash with 'VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_GTK=force'

Actuall when I use VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_GTK=yes

It use the vmware's GTK (old gtk outlook is seen)

I hope a patch will be released for fixing this.

Tried "VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_GTK=force vmware". Drag and drop does not work as usual.

i.e. Vmware workstation does not crash, but drag and drop just don't work at all.

I have this problem for a long time...

I have the exact same symptoms using VMware Workstation 11.1.2 on Xubuntu 15.04 Desktop AMD64 (which is just Ubuntu 15.04 with XFCE as the desktop environment). I tried setting the environment variable VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_GTK to no, yes, and force. It looks different when the environment variable is set to yes or force, but it exhibits the same symptoms with regards to dragging and dropping in the library and using the Edit -> Cut feature

I haven't tried it, but it looks like we could hand-edit ~/.vmware/inventory.vmls as a workaround until this is fixed.

Also exact same problem, xubuntu 15.04 x86_64. Can confirm that editing ~/.vmware/inventory.vmls works, fix would be appreciated.

I uninstalled Workstation 11 then installed Workstation 12 in the same environment (Xubuntu 15.04 Desktop AMD64) and it still has the same symptoms.

I have the same issue with workstation 12.0.0 in Ubuntu Gnome 15.04. Installed everything a couple of days ago and it worked like a charm. But some time today something happened and now I can't move vm's into folder or cut them. Cut results in a crash.

Very frustrating not being able to sort all the vm's and linked clones! Great tips on editing the inventory.vmls though to sort it out for now. Hopefully we can find a solution for this asap.

This is fixed in Ubuntu 15.10. The same versions of VMware Workstation that had this issue on 15.04 no longer have the issue in Ubuntu 15.10. I don't know if VMware was misusing a GTK API and GTK now contains workarounds for that type of misuse or if GTK had buggy APIs that VMware just started using in Workstation 11.

I think I just figured out the reason this topic hasn't seen more discussion. It doesn't affect everyone with VMware Workstation 11+ on Ubuntu -- only systems where Ubuntu's libgtkmm-2.4 is installed. Let me explain.

VMware Workstation 12.0.0 would not start up at all on the Xubuntu 15.10 system where it was working earlier today. The apploader log said that it failed to resolve some symbols while loading libvmwareui.so. I googled that error and found it had to do with Glib/GTK's MM API (provided by libgtkmm-* Ubuntu packages). So, I checked my dpkg log to see what I had installed or removed earlier today to make it stop working. Lo and behold, I had installed gparted, which relies on the GTK 2.4 MM API and installs libgtkmm-2.4 as a dependency, whereas the rest of the desktop environment relies on the newer GTK 3.0 APIs (libgtkmm-3.0). I removed gparted and its dependencies, and VMware ran without a hitch and library organization using the VMware Workstation 12.0.0 UI worked just like it did earlier today.

This got me thinking, so I went to another Xubuntu system that I hadn't upgraded to 15.10, yet, and I removed gparted, which was the only package depending on libgtkmm-2.4 on that system as well. I can now perform library organization using the VMware Workstation 12.0.0 UI on my 15.04 and 14.04 hosts! Yay!

I looked in the apploader log of a VMware Workstation instance started after removing Ubuntu's libgtkmm-2.4 package, and it appears to come with its own libgtkmm-2.4 that it will use if one is not installed on the system. Since all the module loading appears to be done dynamically within VMware's business logic, I don't think configuring the system loader (using the LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variable or another similar technique) will work to allow gparted and VMware Workstation 11+ to be installed at the same time. I guess I can use GNOME's disk utility (i.e., gnome-disks, provided by the gnome-disk-utility Ubuntu package) until this is resolved.

I hope this helps users workaround the issue, and maybe it will help Ubuntu maintainers or VMware developers to root-cause and resolve it permanently.

The problem is still there after one year..

The problem is still there when using vmware workstation 12.1..

I am using Fedora. I had tried to remove libgtkmm24 but it does not help.
