I've been using VMware workstation 10 on a Linux host and Windows guest for quite a while, but at some point after changing Nvidia drivers or kernels or something the drop-down menus on windows displayed in unity mode became transparent and I couldn't read any of the text. I tried many superstitious behaviors, such as uninstalling and reinstalling VMware tools, but it never worked consistently.
The apparent fix is to enter the following line in a terminal (without the quotes) before entering VMware:
"export XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1"

this seems to completely solve the problem of invisible menus.
The host : Linux mint 17 kernel 3.17.2, latest Nvidia drivers (343.22), VMware workstation 10.03, Windows 7 professional 64 bit.
