VMware on Nutanix versus VMware on blades

Hi All,

Customer has requested to understand the deployment strategy and benefits of deploying VMware on Nutanix and deploying VMware on Blades? Just wondering if anyone have document or guide to compare both please?

Disclaimer: I am a Sr. Solutions & Performance Engineer at Nutanix

The only real similarity between Nutanix and blade deployments is they are considered space saving solutions, however this is really where the similarities end.

VMware on Blades is a Compute only solution, which requires some form of shared storage such as a SAN or NAS to be connected to it via FC or IP connectivity.

Nutanix however is a Hyper-converged platform, which includes both Compute and Storage in a 2RU form factor.

Nutanix is basically a datacenter in a box which provides compute/storage resources as well as a fully integrated management platform. Deploying Nutanix is very simple and takes <30mins from factory default to running vSphere and VMs in an optimal storage configuration.

Blades with VMware (Plus Storage) could take many days or weeks to implement following a potentially complex design phase.

Nutanix has all the features you would expect from a SAN/NAS such as Compression, Deduplication, Thin Provisioning, Snapshot based backups/replication, even support for Stretched Clusters which we call Metro Availability.

Here is a report from an independant consulting firm comparing a Cisco UCS blade based solution (vBlock which includes SAN storage) to Nutanix.
