Display Issues with Yosemite

I just did a clean install of Yosemite, and installed the latest release of Fusion, however, I am unable to use multiple displays in fullscreen or unity mode.  My VM is running Windows 7.  When I select "Use all displays in full screen" and enter full screen mode my monitors are all mirrored.  I have tried rebooting the VM and host machine several times as well as reinstalling VMware tools to no avail.  I also tried creating a brand new VM with a fresh install of Windows 7 but got the same result.  When trying to enter unity mode I receive a message "Display configuration is not supported.  For best compatibility, shut down the virtual machine, upgrade the virtual hardware compatibility to the latest version, and ensure that VMware Tools are up to date."  I receive this message on both my new VM and imported one.  Compatibility mode is already at 11 and VMware tools is up to date.

Has anyone else encountered this?

Thx for using Fusion.

Do you use Fusion 7 Tech Preview build or Fusion 7 GA build? Pls let me know the Fusion build number.

And what kind of OS do you use? How many external monitors do you connect? For now, we just can support three displays including main display.

Pls also attach the display topology, it can be got from Apple -> System Preference -> Display -> Arrangement.

Hi jcui0122,

I am using the GA release of Fusion 7 (Version 7.0.0 - 213067) as well as the GA release of OS X Yosemite.  I have three displays including the main display that are connected via Thunderbolt.  This is the exact same setup I was running with OS X Mavericks and VMware Fusion without an issue.  I participated in the tech preview build of fusion 7 and ran it with the public beta of Yosemite and had no display issues.    I did a fresh install of the GA release of Yosemite and VMWare Fusion 7 but cannot use multiple displays or Unity mode.

Hi nthebay,

There is some code change in this area after Fusion 7 Tech Preview, one big difference is that now we require the guest topology to be correct. So pls let me know your display topology as my above comments, let me check whether we support the guest topology. Thx a lot.

I have attached a screenshot of System Preferences --> Displays --> Arrangement.  Is this the information you need?

Yes, Thx a lot. I think the topology should be supported....

Pls let me know your display information, by running below cmd at the terminal of the host, then attach the output here:

system_profiler SPDisplaysDataType

And pls try to reproduce the problem(enter unity, and get the topology not support msg), and then attach below two logs here?

1. /Users/<your user name>/Library/Logs/VMware Fusion/vmware-fusion.log

2. Right click your VM, and choose "Show Package Content", then find vmware.log

I'll use above information to open a internal bug to get dev's help, Thx a lot for your effort in advance.

Hi!

Jumping in on an existing discussion here instead of creating a new one; I updated to VMWare Fusion 7 yesterday, and are having this exact same issue getting Unity mode to work. Checking my logs, I see this:

When attempting to go into fullscreen, I get a mirrored configuration on all my displays - and Windows only sees one screen. In addition the resolution is way off, so in addition everything looks horrendous.

My topology consists of the laptop screen (MBP Retina), two 24" screens and one 21" screen in non-mirrored mode. This used to work just fine in VMWare Fusion 6, and after updating I'm forced into doing my Windows-work (which is a big chunk of my workday) inside a single window on a single desktop. Having a limit of two monitors supported in a topology seems mindblowing, I hope there are imminent plans to increase this? Having two external monitors hooked up to a laptop cannot be a weird use-case, there are three display ports on a MBP. I really hope there is a quick solution to this, because at the moment I'm regretting the upgrade.

The solution outlined at http://www.jonathanmedd.net/2014/03/using-more-than-one-external-monitor-in-vmware-fusion-6.html allows me to use all 4 displays in proper fullscreen at least, so it's possible to make this work until a better solution is in place by VMWare.

Similar situation here.  I use Windows 8.1 Pro for development, running within VMWare Professional Version 7.0.0 (2103067) on a Macbook Pro Retina 15-inch, Late 2013 with 2 external monitors connected via min-display adapters through Thunderbolt ports.  I updated from Mavericks 10.9.5 to Yosemite and at the same time updated to the latest VMWare Professional.   I the View menu item for VMware used to say, "Use multiple displays for Full Screen" and now says "Use Single Display in FullScreen".  Checking it causes Windows to mirror across monitors instead of extending like the previous behavior.    Unity also fails as others noted.  A quick fix for this would be greatly appreciated.

Hi nthebay,

Have you ever try plug external monitors out, power off the VM (not suspend, but a full shutdown), restart Fusion, then plug external monitors, enter into unity again? Will that work?

And I've open an internal bug for this, fyi.

I attempted this now (same issue as nthebay), and it seems to allow Unity mode - and seems to be a good workaround for now.

I also tried that last recommendation.  Neither multiple displays nor Unity work on my system.

Oh, and I received an update for VMware Fusion, so I'm now at 7.0.1 (2235595)

Nothing new to add, just digging.  This bug has ruined my productivity by constraining me to a single display.  Does anyone know if there are beta versions of Fusion, which have a fix?

I would also like to know when this will be fixed.  Its hard to believe it is taking so long to correct such a critical feature.  I have been forced to start using Parallels and since my trial is nearly up I will have to purchase a license if this is still not corrected in Fusion.

I am having the same issues.  However, and oddly, i decided to do a fresh install of yosemite.  I did just that and then downloaded Fusion 7, let it update again, and then the issue started.  I was able to run Unity after an upgrade to Yosemite, but after I did clean install - this is when the issues started.  When I try to enter Unity I get the same error "Display configuration is not supported"  I have 2 new Thunderbolt based LG monitors daisy chained and one of them comes back to my MAC.  Again, this was working until clean install of Yosemite!


If I disconnect the Thunderbolt cable, and then the VM moves back to my MBP, I can enter Unity, but nothing seems to work at all if I try launching an app.  If I try to plug the monitors back in, while in Unity, I get the above error again, the VM goes into fullscreen on a monitor, but really seems all locked up.  If I unplug the monitors, I can exit Unity, and then everything is back to normal.  The machine seems to work.


The VM is an Win 8.1 OS, all patched, latest VMware tools (9.8.4.2202052), and vHardware is 11.   I also have a Windows 7 machine all patched up, same thing, same tools version, and same vHardware.


So, there is obviously a bug now.  What I don't get is, and again, this worked on an upgrade from Mavericks to Yosemite, but not on a clean install of Yosemite.

For the first decade or so of my career, I only used Windows for development.  Microsoft conditioned me to always do a full installation to avoid wasting drive space and lingering incompatible drivers and other system files.   Sounds like Apple may do the same.  Perhaps to support some apps, maybe even Fusion 7 itself, OS X retained older video drivers in the update from Mavericks to Yosemite.

Yes Sir!  Completely agree.  When I first installed Yosemite, I was like a kid in a candy store and didnt want to take the time to do it right.  25 years of I.T., knowing all the issues, I simply did it any way.  So, a month later - just took the time over the weekend to rebuild.  Everything is running with more snap, quicker boot, but you are very right with the stuff that "sticks" vs. the upgrade.  Makes you really wonder how much artifact is left behind anytime, on any OS, if someone does not take the time!

Hello all,

It's slightly worrying however a little bit reassuring I am not the only one having this issue currently.

I have two external monitors a Thunderbolt 27" and a 22" Samsung Monitor connected via VGA off my 15" MacBook Pro Retina

The worrying thing this worked perfectly having all three displays in use inside VMWare Fusion 6 without any problems.

Now after upgrading to Yosemite and VMWare Fusion 7 I can only get one display to work. So I currently use my largest display out of the three, however I use all monitors when doing development work inside WIndows and this has effected my productivity. I wish I had not upgraded now.

I have spoke with Customer Service team and I was assuming they would be able to help me fix the problem, however the only suggestion was to uninstall and put VMWare Fusion 6 back on instead. Not a great solution in my eyes and a bit of an oversight by the development team that a feature that was perfectly working now longer no works.

I hope the VMWare Fusion team is reading this & see this and ensure this bug becomes high priority for their backlog and gets fixed as a priority.

For anyone curious about the setup or may have similar setups I have posted some screenshots below for reference.

If anyone manages to find a solution on here or the VMWare Fusion team can offer a solution I would love to hear it.

EDIT: After properly reading the thread rather posting my thoughts in a rush & grumpy mood.
Am I right in reading that the solution seems to be to do an upgrade from Mavericks to Yosemite as opposed to a clean install of Yosemite?

I did a clean install of Yosemite as at the time I wanted to do a bit of spring cleaning and remove some stuff that I no longer needed or
even used, so a fresh install seemed the best idea to me.


How many people have tried this approach with success?
As I ideally don't want to be reinstalling OS's if I have to to still have the same problem.
