Lost my Tool bar in Full screen mode

Greetings,

VM Workstation 10.0.3 Build 1895310 running in Ubuntu 14.04 64bit

Yesterday my tool bar disappeared from the tool bar when working in full screen mode.  I still see the tabs, I still have the controls for Stop Play etc.  I just lost the Standard tool bar (File, Edit, View, VM and Tabs) menus.  I like to use these to connect USB devices, but now I have to drop out of full screen mode to make a change.  If I right click on the toolbar, I get no options.  I have gone into Edit -> Preferences -> Displays and played with all the check boxes, but was unable to get the standard toolbar options back in full screen.  Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Try Edit -> Preferences -> Display and uncheck Combine tabs with toolbar in full screen.

Tried that, no joy.  I have checked and unchecked all the boxes on the display preferences and have not found a combination that brings back the menus.  For the windows version I found a post that says to right click on the VM Workstation tool bar and choose from that menu, but I get no context menu when I right click in Ubuntu.

I can also confirm this problem on Vmware Workstation 9.0.3 with Ubuntu 14.04 64bit, I just upgraded from 12.04 this week.

I can no longer see the file menu in the tool bar in full screen mode, which means you can't easily attach/modify USB devices.

Did anyone find a solution for this problem?

Press Control-Alt-Enter to restore your toolbar.

You will see this keystroke in Titlebar : View  : Full Screen (Ctrl+Alt+Enter)

What is your monitor resolution set at? I had similar issue and I found out that it was doing it after I changed the resolution of my monitor. I set the resolution back to the recommended resolution and the toolbar started appearing on the screen.Lost my Tool bar in Full screen mode

This problem still exists. I am using:

  • Workstation 15 Player
  • 15.5.0 build-14665864
  • VM with Windows 10 as the operating system

I would like to provide additional details as to what happens to me. I think I have figured out a cause of this issue. Sometimes I keep my VM open for a long time when I know I am going to be using it for an extended period of time. I have realized that when I do the following then I lose the VM Ware toolbar all together:

  • Restart the VM while in fullscreen mode
  • Install a windows update on the VM which usually ends in a restart

Upon restart the VM Ware toolbar disappears and the only workaround I have to get back to my host machine is to do the following:

  1. Press Ctrl + Alt
  2. Press Windows Key
  3. Fumble around with your taskbar to do whatever you are going to do.

Alternatively just shut down the VM all together when that's an option.

Anyhow - can this be fixed? Not the end of the world but not fun either.

I've been struggling with the same problem for a long time.

To recover the menu / toolbar, I hit ctrl-alt-del, then escape, and I have a few seconds to access the menu - sometimes very few and I have to try several times.

Pinning the menu bar is the only way, for me, to have it always available. As I move around several VMs, this is quite annoying.

It only happens to me if the guest is Windows 10.

Sorry to dig up an old thread but I do have a solution.

I found that modifying the preferences.ini file worked with getting the toolbar back.

The file can be found at C:\Users\*YourUsername*\Appdata\Roaming\Vmware\preferences.ini

The line "pref.fullscreen.autohide" should have the value of TRUE assigned to it when the toolbar is minimized, change it to FALSE and the toolbar will no longer be set to hidden.

Not sure if you found an answer but I hit F11 by accident and it hid everything but the current window I had open and I couldn't figure out what I did. This wonderful page saved my bacon: VMware Workstation and Server Shortcut Keys (windowstechupdates.com)  I had to find a full list of shortcuts so I could look thru them and found it.
