MSA2040 Enclosure Query

Just curious if it is normal to see the enclosure on LUN 0 showing up under Storage Adapters.

I have an MSA2040 with Dual controllers patched to Brocade switches and 3 Vmhosts on those switches. For some reason under Storage Adapters when I click on the HBA I see my LUNS I created but I also see the enclosure.  Is that normal as I have never noticed it before.

I'm not a HP guy, but searching on Google, seems to be a normal behavior in some firmware levels, check the comments at this blog post: http://www.jpaul.me/?p=940&cpage=1#comments

Anyway you can use claimrules to mask this, check the procedures: Masking a LUN from ESX and ESXi using the MASK_PATH plug-in (1009449)

I have LUN 0 showing as the chassis of the MSA2040 as well. The trick to preventing it clashing with storage LUNs is to use explicit mapping for the volumes and start the numbering from 1, that way 0 is unused as the SAN uses it for the controllers, but be sure you set the system "Missing LUN Response" option to use its Illegal Request setting to prevent it skipping some LUNs.

Be sure to shutdown the host server first. Then log into either the controller A or B SMU. In the View panel, right-click the system and select

Configuration > Advanced Settings > Cache  and change the LUN response from NOT READY  to  ILLEGAL REQUEST then click Apply and Restart the host.
